Manufacturing jobs in China have been disappearing in recent years, a troubling trend that has spurred concern among workers in the country.
The nation’s manufacturing sector has long struggled to create jobs, with the economy shrinking by more than 6 million jobs between 2007 and 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Contec, which makes cleanroom appliances, was founded in 2016 by former Contec employees.
The company announced plans to close its U.S. manufacturing operations in 2019.
“We know the job is not going to come back,” said Ken Pomeranz, Contec’s president.
“It’s a good thing that it is going to close.”
In addition to jobs at the company’s plants, about 1,500 workers were laid off in the past two years, Pomeranza said.
The job cuts, combined with a downturn in consumer spending, have forced Contec to reduce its workforce by roughly a third.
While the company says it has plans to bring back some of those workers, it will be a labor-intensive process.
Pomerantz said the company has been in talks with a number of labor groups, including the United Auto Workers union, to find workers who can do the job.
The union said that about 30% of the workers at the plant had been laid off by the end of this year.
Potholes in Contec plants are a common problem for the UAW, Pothanz said.
He said he was unaware of any specific problems that had resulted from the U.A.W. strike.
But he said the union has repeatedly raised concerns about conditions at the plants.
“I’m not going into the details, because I want them to know we have an ongoing conversation with them,” he said.
“The union is working with us on a plan to get our people back.”
The Contec factory employs about 5,000 people, Pomersonanz said, but the plant’s output has dropped over the past decade due to a combination of the factory’s closure and other factors.
Contecs new line of cleaner cleaning equipment, dubbed the Power Clean, will be manufactured at its plant in North Carolina.
The power cleaner uses an advanced manufacturing process to remove debris and dust from the factory floor.
The cleaner, which costs about $10,000, will not be available until 2019, but it is expected to be ready for sale by then.
Pomenez said he is hopeful the cleaner will be available for sale before the end
